If you wish to live or work in Indonesia, you will require a KITAS (Kartu Izin Tinggal Terbatas), which is a Residence Permit Card for a temporary or restricted stay. It permits the bearer to stay in Indonesia for up to 12 months but can be extended if necessary.
When you apply for a work visa, retirement visa, spouse/family visa, or any long-term visa to Indonesia, you will be given a KITAS.
You need a sponsor (like your company) to assist you with the application because this is a resident permit, not a tourist visa, and a big part of the application procedure takes place from within Indonesia.
Who Should Submit an Application for KITAS?
- Legally married foreigners to Indonesian citizens
- Children of lawfully married foreigners to Indonesian citizens
- Children born in the Indonesian Territory to fathers and mothers with a Limited Stay Permit Card.
- Foreign people entering Indonesian territory on a restricted stay visa or foreigners granted status transfer from a Visit Stay Permit
- The captain, crew, or foreign specialists on board ships, floating equipment, or installations working in Indonesian seas or jurisdictions in line with rules and regulations.
- Foreigners might also be awarded a Limited Stay Permit Card to undertake short-term labor.
KITAS for Working in Indonesia
Although the phrase KITAS/ITAS is commonly used, the official word for an Indonesian Temporary Expatriate Work Permit is an RPTKA (Rencana Penggunaan Tenaga Kerja Asing). As previously stated, an ITAS is a stay permit. A foreigner working in Indonesia must realize that an RPTKA and a KITAS/ITAS are two separate permissions that must be applied for.
Sponsorship from your employer is essential to apply for a Work KITAS/ITAS. Furthermore, the Employer must be an Indonesian enterprise. Locally registered enterprises in Indonesia are classified as a PT, PT PMA, or a representative office. A work KITAS/ITAS also permits a foreigner to re-enter Indonesia numerous times with a single permit, also known as a MERP (Multiple Exit and Re-entry Permit).
KITAS Marriage Visa
A foreigner who is lawfully married to an Indonesian citizen may be sponsored by his or her spouse for a KITAS/ITAS family visa. Please keep in mind that this is not an Indonesian work visa. You will be permitted to stay in Indonesia but not to work.
The application requires a valid marriage certificate authorized by the Indonesian government. If you marry overseas, you must have an Indonesian-legalized CNI (Certificate of No Impediment to Marriage) in Indonesian. After a two-year marriage, you can apply for a permanent residence visa (KITAP) in Indonesia. With MERP, KITAP has a 5-year validity period (multiple exits and re-entry permit).
KITAS Work Visa
Foreign nationals who want to work for an Indonesian firm or organization are granted the Work Visa KITAS. For a work KITAS, your employer must get a work permit (IMTA) from the Indonesian Ministry of Manpower on your behalf.
The length of your employment contract will then be used to calculate your KITAS.
Some individuals mistakenly believe that a KITAS is a work visa. It is not the case. You may have a KITAS yet be unable to work (such as Retirement or Dependent KITAS). A foreigner is only permitted to work in Indonesia if they have a work permit (IMTA).
Documents Required for a KITAS in Indonesia
The documents you need in order to obtain a KITAS differ depending on the type of Indonesian visa/KITAS you need. They include:
- Your valid passport and a colored copy of your passport.
- Proof of financial solvency
- Two passport-size colored pictures
- For Work KITAS:
- A colored copy of your CV (resume). It must have the company’s stamp and a signature by a company director over the stamp.
- A copy of the RPTKA
- A colored copy of your university certificate/s or the highest level of educational degree.
- A certificate of work experience (at least five years) that’s connected to the job
- Proof of an insurance policy issued by an Indonesian insurance company
- Documents from your company, such as NPWP tax identification number, Business license (SIUP), Capital Registration Licence (SPPMA) from the BKPM, etc.
For Spouse/Family KITAS:
- ID Card (KTP) and Family Card (Kartu Keluarga) of the Indonesian spouse
- Birth certificate (Akta Lahir) of Indonesian spouse
- Bank Statement of the Indonesian spouse
- Birth certificate/s for dependent children if applicable
How Do I Get a KITAS Indonesia?
Within 30 days after entering Indonesia with a VITAS, you must apply for a KITAS. The VITAS is the Indonesian entrance visa, which you must apply for at an Indonesian Embassy or Consulate near you. The Indonesian Directorate General of Immigration accepts ITAS/KITAS applications online.
