Foreigners who want to work in Indonesia should instead apply for a Temporary Stay Permit (KITAS) and be subjected to local and/or national tax.

This is because while they do come to Indonesia for tourism purposes, they are technically also working in Indonesia – even if they do so remotely for companies outside of Indonesia.
